“Bradbury moved to Los Angeles in 1934 and spent the rest of his life on the West Coast, but his fondness for Waukegan never dissipated.
After his death, library officials learned Bradbury had bequeathed his personal book collection to the County Street facility.
It’s no small gift.”

First thing this morning, a man came up to the desk to ask if we had a library cat.
Me: “You mean a cat that lives here? Sadly, no.”
Man: “I just read that Dewey the Library Cat book. I think this library should get a cat!”
Me: “I don’t think it’s in the cards. But that would be neat, huh?”
Man: “Tell you what. I’ll donate a cat. I’m sure there are some free kittens listed on Craigslist.”
Me: “Please don’t do that. We love animals, but we can’t have a library cat.”
Man: “How about a puppy?”

“The bookstore’s continued success has much to do with its extensive event programming for patrons of all ages. One whole floor of the three-story building is dedicated to childrens’ books. Some live readings are so popular, listeners must sit on the floor. The store also draws customers through its carefully selected the books, often displayed with staff recommendations.”
Gee, that list sounds familiar!

Always a relevant discussion for me, siiigh,
As the University of Iowa prepares for anticipated flooding of the Iowa River, some efforts have begun in the Main Library to remove books from lower level basement storage. These…Special Collections materials were moved to the third floor in early 2012.

Chess
Yep, at the ICPL you can check out big chess pieces to play outside on the patterned sidewalk. (If memory serves, they used to be bigger than this but these were the best replacements that could be found.)
It’s not full-time and I don’t get benefits but I really love my second little library job. Right now I finally get to realize one of my silly dreams from library school and help rebuild a neglected circulating music collection!
The assistant director wants to change our CD processing, too, because right now we kinda cover most of front with barcodes and fine warnings and property stickers. WHOOPS.
I have experience from my other job, but I’m curious what folks do with music CDs in other libraries. Anybody out there proud of their processing?
Never ones to be outdone, Crossett Library is rolling out some pet therapy for our patrons. Of course, after a quick call to PETA it turned out that renting kangaroos and elephants is not easy OR humane (or legal, I’m not sure, I hung up when they started talking about lawsuits.)
But our patrons deserve the best, so they got the best that we got! From left to right, our Animal All-Stars:

If you’re in the area (on campus) feel free to come by this afternoon and Pet A Pet. (Best if you steer clear of the camel, fur is a little funky from spending most of its life inside the mouth of a golden retriever.)
Awesome.
Send me your library card number; I’ll put random surprises on hold for you.
This is a brilliant idea for the teen who doesn’t know what to read once you’ve developed a rapport with him or her.
+100. Talk about bringing delight to your patrons! If you’re in a school, you can make the transaction more convenient by sending them to the student in their homeroom (even big HS kids love getting mail).
Awesome idea!
This is so adorable!
