W.Va. jail receives book windfall
“The closing of a used-book shop will result in a trove of new reading material for the South Central Regional Jail.
Well Read owner Rena Seidler is closing her shop’s doors after opening a little over a year ago. As a parting gesture, she’ll give her unsold inventory of between 2,500 and 3,000 books to the jail.”

Glennor Shirley, head librarian for Md. prisons, believes in books behind bars
“Miss Shirley has weathered deficits during previous recessions as lawmakers diverted money away from prisoners toward law-abiding citizens — a constituency, she knows, that is prone to ask, ‘Why give money to murderers to read when people can’t get jobs?’
… Miss Shirley says library users tend to be better behaved and more focused on their future, even if, like Heslop, they will likely spend the rest of their lives behind bars. His favorite magazine: Entrepreneur. ‘You might read a story in there of a person being poor, sleeping on the street, but they had an education and they knew where to go to elevate themselves,’ he says. ‘It’s very encouraging.’”
